Studio Do’s and Don’ts:
We cover many important topics in class to help every actor understand not only the big insights, but the dozens of small details that separate the amateurs from the pros. Here, for example, is a sneak preview short list of Do’s and Don’ts of studio protocol.
DO:
- Defer to the director only.
- Listen to and respect the Engineer.
- Keep between-takes conversation positive.
- Let your acting partner know if you are planning to ad-lib or improvise at a certain point in the copy – and make sure the Director is okay with this.
- Your very best work in every single take. This one job can affect the next few months or years of your life.
DO NOT:
- Direct the director.
- Give another actor a line reading of how you’d do it.
- Talk directly to the writer or the clients during the session.
- Suggest writing changes to the writer or director.
- Speak negatively about the script, the client, the brand, or the product during the session or audition. Never bite the hand that feeds you or the one that might.
